Cookie policy

Updated: 9 October 2026

The short version

The site sets two functional cookies: one remembers your language, the other your cookie choice. Both are set only once you do something yourself. Google Analytics 4 adds two more, but only if you agree to analytics. We use no advertising and no social plugins.

Cookie list

NameType, lifetime and purpose
ascent_langFunctional, up to 1 year. Remembers the language you chose with the switcher and opens the homepage in that language on your next visit. Set only when you switch language.
ascent_consentFunctional, up to 6 months. Remembers whether you accepted or rejected analytics, so the banner does not appear on every visit. Set only when you click a button in the banner.
_gaAnalytics, up to 2 years. Google Analytics uses it to tell visitors apart by means of a random identifier. Only after you accept.
_ga_<ID>Analytics, up to 2 years. Google Analytics uses it to store the state of a visit. The <ID> part is our measurement ID. Only after you accept.

All four cookies are stored on our own domain. The _ga and _ga_<ID> cookies are used by Google Analytics; the other two are ours.

Some browsers, Safari for example, shorten the lifetime of cookies set by the page itself to 7 days, so the banner may reappear sooner.

Besides cookies, the site may keep one technical note in your browser (session storage) for the length of a visit: whether your device can handle the more demanding background animation. It disappears when you close the tab and is never sent anywhere.

Which cookies we set without asking

The functional cookies ascent_lang and ascent_consent are needed for the site to do what you asked of it: remember your language and your choice. They are only set once you do something yourself, by switching the language or clicking a button in the banner. That is why we store them without asking for consent. Analytics cookies are stored only with your consent.

Consent to analytics

On your first visit, a banner appears with two equally prominent buttons: Accept and Reject. Until you click Accept, the site loads nothing from Google and sets no analytics cookies. The site remembers a refusal too, so the banner does not keep coming back. Your choice is kept for up to 6 months, after which we ask again.

The privacy policy explains what Google Analytics 4 measures, how long the data is kept and who processes it.

How to change or withdraw your consent

Every page has a Cookie settings link in the footer. It reopens the banner, where you can change your choice. If you withdraw your consent, the site stops loading Google Analytics and deletes the _ga and _ga_<ID> cookies it set.

You can also delete cookies in your browser settings. The site then forgets your language and your choice, and the banner appears again.

Effective date and changes

This policy is effective from 9 October 2026. If the site starts setting different cookies, we will update the policy and its date.
