The brief
KORU is a yoga and movement studio. Nobody chooses a place like this from a list of services. They choose it because the website already gives them a sense of the calm they’re looking for.
So above all the site has to capture the atmosphere. The practical information matters too, but it mustn’t be the first thing a visitor sees.
The solution
The page is built on large, full-width photographs. There’s little text, and the headings switch between an upright face and an italic, which gives them rhythm and stops them reading like captions.
The navigation sits at the top, out of the way. Anyone looking for classes or contact details finds them straight away. Anyone just browsing has nothing they need to click and simply moves from one photo to the next, which is exactly the idea.
The look
The colours come from the landscapes in the photographs: warm sand, off-white and terracotta, which picks out single words in the headings and the active menu item. A serif with a strong italic softens the text, and the studio’s story opens with a large drop cap, as in a book.
The photographs show people practising outdoors and among buildings: on sand, against a concrete wall, in low light. They have rounded corners and a fine outline frame set slightly behind them, so the page feels calm and personal rather than like a gym brochure.
The details
The navigation has five items: home, classes, events, gallery and contact. The Book button stays on the right, so anyone who has already decided doesn’t need to scroll through photographs to find it. A band of large italic words drifts slowly between the opening and the rest of the page.
The About section is written in the first person, because people choose a yoga class mostly by who teaches it. The site is in Czech and English, and anyone who wants more photographs than the homepage holds will find them in a separate gallery.
